6 beaches in Costa Vicentina (Portuguese Southwest Coast)

Portugal’s Southwest coast between Alentejo and the Algarve, Costa Vicentina is known for its dunes and rugged cliffs, small fishing villages and countless wide and wild empty beaches. Protected along mots of its length by strict environmental laws, these remarkable beaches are an ideal destination for adventure seekers. 

 It’s not easy to choose just 6 beaches because Costa Vicentina’s is full of breathtaking options. Here are (only) a few of amazing options that you (really) need to know. 

1. Praia da Samoqueira

Between São Torpes and Porto Covo, you will find this hidden beach surrounded by cliffs. Praia da Samoqueira is both breathtaking and captivating, with natural pools, caves and islets. It’s an unwatched beach that doesn’t have any amenities besides its idyllic and captivating setting, with soft sand and perfectly clean water.

2. Praia do Vale dos Homens

Located in the heart of Costa Vicentina, this is a large, uncrowded wild beach. With high schist sea cliffs framing the beach, with an huge wooden staircase to get to. During high tide, the beach is reduced to a small strip of sand, but during low tide, you will see natural pools appear among the rocks.  

3. Praia do Amoreira

Praia da Amoreira is a hidden gem, ideal to swim and surf, its sandy beach has ample space for everyone to relax. Behind the beach, you will find the dunes with the dreamy lagoon. With the incoming tides, the lagoon fills up daily with fresh crystal-clear water.

4. Praia dos Alteirinhos

Located in Zambujeira do Mar, Praia dos Alteirinhos is a wild beach quite easy to get to. The beach itself is a good-sized stretch of golden sand backed by high cliffs. The access is via a lot of steps – make sure you’ve brought everything you need because there are no facilities on the beach.

5. Praia da Arrifana

Praia da Arrifana is a beautiful beach and a popular surf destination located in the small fishing village of Arrifana. It’s a long and narrow beach, stretching for more than half a kilometer. Surrounded by high black cliffs and traditional white houses, the scenery around the beach is beautiful.

6. Praia de Odeceixe

The Atlantic coast beach of Praia de Odeceixe straddles the border between the Algarve and Alentejo, circled by an estuary on one side and cliffs on the other. It is located at River Seixe’s mouth (Rio de Seixe) with a green valley leading to the beach.
